Inside Golf : Inside Golf April 2017
22 April 2017 | www.insidegolf.com.au on tour with Steven Jeffress firstname.lastname@example.org Melbourne and Match play: building strong MoMentuM M elbourne greeted me with some beautiful temperatures as it’s been so humid on the Gold Coast this year. Huntingdale was the host for the Victorian PGA and as normal it was in great condition. The event is a Pro-am format the first 2 days so robbie bennetts and I teamed up, hoping to be holding the silverware at the end of the week. Well I won’t bore you with all the details but neither robbie nor I held up anything, as the golf was just above average. I shot rounds of 72, 72, 69 and 74 to finish in 27th position. Although the golf wasn’t spectacular, it was great to get back into the swing of tournament golf as it had been nearly two months since my last event, and there were some good signs with a couple of big events coming. It was a short drive from Huntingdale down to 13th beach for the Victorian open, my next event. As usual I stayed with some great friends of mine, rex and Izzy who live in Geelong and are members at 13th beach. They always go out of their way to make sure that I am rested and ready to play. but I must admit that the biggest advantage of staying with them is Izzy’s cooking, she’s amazing! The course was in its usual awesome condition and the whole event has an amazing feel. I played solid but nothing great and opened with rounds of 68 and 69 to be 7-under through two rounds which had me safely making the cut but sitting about six shots back from the leader. A mate of mine bob caddied for me on day 3 but things didn’t go to plan. I turned 2-under first 9 but struggled around the back, shooting 3-over and missing the 3rd round cut by a shot. because this event has male and female professionals playing they have to cut the field after day 3 to be able to fit everyone off the 1st tee on day 4. So I finished in 36th position, not great but still a check! I flew from Melbourne to Perth on the Monday morning and after a 3am wake up and a flight delay, it would be fair to say I felt fairly average. My driver over the past three months or so has been misbehaving a little so I was keen to try a couple of new drivers that the companies seem to bring out every three months. I spent most of Monday afternoon on the range testing new drivers but by Wednesday morning I started to realize that maybe it isn’t the driver? lawrie Montague, my mental coach, came out with me on Wednesday and we worked on some simple mental techniques and you know what, I started to drive it better. All of a sudden the new drivers went back in the locker and my driver started going straight. I was off early the 1st round so deep down I knew that I needed to get off to a hot start. Well, ask and you will receive! All of a sudden I was 3-under through 4 and leading the event. After a few more birdies and a few more bogeys I signed for a 4-under par 68, which had me smiling from ear to ear. A midday start the next day meant that I knew that more good golf was needed as the course normally starts to get harder and GOLD COAST SUNSHINE COAST QUEENSTOWN, N.Z.
