22 August 2017 | www.insidegolf.com.au IG BUSINESS - general managers www.insidegolf.com.au/general_managers PGA professionals in the community Seven and Australian Golf sign long-term partnership O ne of the best parts of working for the PGA of Australia is meeting our Members; I am constantly impressed by the calibre of men and women who make up our Association. I particularly like hearing stories about the great work PGA Professionals are doing within the industry and wanted to take this opportunity to share a few of these with you. A trait I commonly see amongst our Membership is their generosity and one such individual caught my attention last month. Brad Alton, the PGA Professional at eynesbury Golf, coordinated a charity event upon learning that one of his members had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and would be leaving behind him a family of three young girls. Brad enlisted the help of his fellow PGA Professionals with Mark Jackson (Melton Valley), James Pratt (Club Mandalay), Marty Walsh and Russell Kelly (Kooringal), Brett Scothern (Medway), Heath Bensted (northern), Geoff Ross (Sunshine), Scott McDermott (Settlers Run), David Tapping (Albert Park Driving Range) and the PGA itself all making contributions toward the charitable efforts. While I know that the money was greatly appreciated by the family, the sense of community and care created by Brad at eynesbury Golf was just as significant for the family as they endure this tough time. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Gary Burmester on a wonderful career where he dedicated the past 35 years to servicing the golfers and community at Mt Warren Park Golf Club in Queensland. His lifelong commitment to the club is a testament to his passion for the game. As Gary moves into a well-earned retirement, Dave Delahunty will take the reins. After signing a nine-year agreement about 12 months ago, Dave was brought into the business and transitioned into the sole business owner. I thank both Gary and Dave for their contribution to their Association; this year Mt Warren Park Golf Club is staging three PGA events including an open match, Trainee event and Ladbrokes PGA Legends Tour Pro-Am, as well as numerous Holden Scramble events. At the other end of his career is Matthew Olson who came to be a PGA Professional via the PGA IGI and Professional Year pathway. Recently Matthew was appointed the Assistant Manager at The Lakes Golf Club in Sydney, a promotion from his previous position of Director of Golf. Having graduated in 2010 Matthew’s career has been on a fast track and is a testament to his determination and drive; congratulations Matthew! It is excellent to see the job opportunities pursued by modern PGA Professionals expanding into the management field. Also thinking outside of the square is Luke Ryan and his wife ellie who run the Pro Shop at Gunnedah Golf Club in new South Wales. They are attracting additional clients to their Club, and introducing golf to a new demographic, by installing a sports and fitness store below their Pro Shop. Well done Luke and ellie, what a wonderful concept! • AuSTRALIAn golf ’s premier events will be broadcast by the Seven network this summer and beyond. Seven and the PGA of Australia and Golf Australia confirmed a new long-term agreement to broadcast the emirates Australian Open and Australian PGA Championship. The emirates Australian Open, hosted by The Australian Golf Club in Sydney from 23-26 november, has in recent years enjoyed excellent ratings and attendance by attracting some of the world’s best players including dual champion Jordan Spieth. The following week, the Australian PGA Championship will be played at RACV Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast from 30 november to 3 December and will welcome the european Tour to Australia for the co-sanctioned tournament. With both tournaments broadcast live for five hours each round, the deal ensures Australian golf fans can access live golf free to air. Seven’s Head of Sport Saul Shtein said: “We take great pride in our long association with the emirates Australian Open, as one of the great sports events in Australia. The Australian PGA Championship is also a time-honoured tournament in world golf and with its co- sanctioned deal, our broadcast will reach around the world, continuing to enhance Seven’s reputation as the network of the biggest events in golf.” PGA of Australia and ISPS HAnDA PGA Tour of Australasia CeO Gavin Kirkman said: “Australian golf has found a wonderful home and partner in Channel 7. We have seen some enthralling finishes to ISPS HAnDA PGA Tour of Australasia tournaments in recent years including the marathon seven-hole playoff at the 2015 Australian PGA Championship and of course Jordan Spieth winning a second Stonehaven Cup when he prevailed at the emirates Australian Open last year. I am sure that this year’s tournaments will produce as many memorable moments and, thanks to Channel 7, sports fans can witness them all.” Gavin Kirkman CEO – PGA of Australia GOLD COAST SUNSHINE COAST QUEENSTOWN, N.Z.
